Toward the end of the century, when Baptists more frequently joined other denominations, excommunication became a routine affair, espe cially in town and city churches, which handled most of these cases in the press of other matters. But even when excommunications were pro forma, most churches continued to resist any suggestion that joining another denomination was acceptable. Although they were more reluctant to call it heresy, they persevered in the determination to make it an occasion of discipline. Democratic religion meant doctrinal unity.42
